Ngawa ( Chinese  阿坝 镇 , Pinyin Ābà Zhèn ; Tibetan Ngawa , Wylie: rnga ba ) is a large community in the Chinese province of Sichuan . Located in the municipality Ngawa that the Autonomous County Ngawa in northwestern Sichuan on the border with Qinghai heard in 3200  m altitude and has 10,865 (2000) inhabitants.

Culture

The large community is the religious center of the Tibetans in the autonomous region. There are 37 Buddhist monasteries in and around the town , the largest of which is the Gelugpa Monastery Gerdeng (Kirti) in Aba with 2000 monks. In Aba there is also a monastery of the Bön religion with 800 monks (Nangshuk) and one of the Jonangpa sect (Setenling Gonpa). The following festivals take place every year:

  • Big Festival of Prayer (Monlam): January / February
  • Horse Racing Festival: mid June
  • Six-Four Festival: July / August
  • Zachong Festival: September 15-17

Economy and Transport

Ngawa is the autonomous district's transportation hub and center of trade. From here there are daily long-distance buses to and from Chengdu and the other district towns in the district.

history

During the Empire and Republic, Ngawa was part of the 16th district of Sichuan. During the Chinese civil war, in June 1935, not far from Ngawa, the units of the 1st and 4th Red Front Army united on the Long March of the Chinese Communists. After the civil war, Ngawa became part of the Ngawa Autonomous District, founded in 1952 by the Tibetans and Qiang.

During the 2008 riots in Tibet , thousands of residents demonstrated on March 16, including many monks. Chinese security forces are said to have used tear gas and surrounded a monastery, according to Tibetan exiles. At least eight people were shot. Locals speak of 20 dead. The official Xinhua news agency , on the other hand, reported only four demonstrators on March 20, who had been shot injured by the police during a "self-defense" operation.
