Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm

Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm (* 1491 ; † 1585 ) was a Vietnamese scholar and administrative officer. After retiring from court life, he became a hermit and distinguished himself as a poet and writer. He also acted as an oracle and political advisor. Nguyen Binh Khiem is venerated as a saint by the Cao Dai religion .

Life

Nguyen Binh Khiem was born the son of a high mandarin at the court of the Mạc dynasty and was raised at the court. He received a Confucianist education and graduated in 1535 as the highest official within the Vietnamese Empire . However, Nguyen Binh Khiem retired from public life in 1542 to live the life of a reclusive poet. He also acted as a political advisor and teacher to the Trinh and Nguyen families. He also had numerous students whom he taught in Confucian scholarship. He wrote more than a thousand poems. His two main themes were the beauty of nature and the irony of life itself. He wrote in traditional Chinese as well as in what was then Vietnamese.
