Nhandu coloratovillosus is a species of Brazilian tarantula . It is a medium-sized, two-tone species with a shaggy appearance.

Distribution and habitat

The spider is found in the Amazon rainforest . The distribution area extends along the Rio Araguaia from the south of the state of Pará , over the entire state of Tocantins in the east of the state of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul . The spiders like to occupy termite structures or they can be found in holes on cow pastures.

features

The legs of the female are densely hairy with short brown or yellow-gray woolen hair. It has a lot of longer fox-red hair on its legs that can grow up to an inch long and give it a shaggy appearance. The carapace is colored maroon. The edge of the carapace is lighter than the center. The opisthosoma is also colored maroon and has longer, fiery red hair. The legs have a zebra-like pattern on the top. The femurs of the legs are colored dark maroon. The patellae, on the other hand, are yellow-gray in color. The remaining links are two-colored. At the transition from the tibia to the metatarsus , the spider has a wide yellow-gray section and at the transition from the metatarsus to the tarsus a narrow one. This zebra pattern cannot be seen on the underside. It is only indicated in the patella.

The spermathec of the female consists of two long and thick and only narrowly connected receptacula seminis . These have no heads at their ends. The spider is a so-called " bombardier spider ", which has stinging hairs to strip off the opisthosoma. These stinging hairs belong to the irritable hair types I and III. It has pads of feathered hairs that run backwards on the side of the femur of the fourth pair of legs. The male has tibial apophyses and the species was therefore placed in its own genus by Schmidt, as the Nhandu species described at the time did not have them.

Systematics

Nhandu coloratovillosus was described by the arachnologist Günter Schmidt in 1998 as a holotype of a new genus and species Brazilopelma colloratovilosum . Rogério Bertani placed the species in the genus Nhandu in 2001 despite the presence of tibial apophyses in the male , and Schmidt followed this interpretation in 2003.
