Niccolò Baroncelli († 1453 in Ferrara ) was an Italian sculptor during the Renaissance .

Life

It is believed that Baroncelli was born in Florence . He was a student of Filippo Brunelleschi , but he created his first own works in Padua . In Ferrara , where he stayed until the end of his life, he created the horse for the monument to the Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio , Niccolò III. d'Este , for which he was nicknamed Niccolo del Cavallo . The most important surviving work of Baroncelli is Christ crucified between Mary and John in the Cathedral of Ferrara. This realistic bronze sculpture shows Donatello's influence. Baroncelli's son Giovanni worked as a sculptor and wood carver at Ferari.
