Niccolò Cannicci (born October 29, 1846 in Florence ; † January 19, 1906 there ) was an Italian painter of realism and member of the second generation of the Macchiaioli artist group.

Life

Born the son of the painter Gaetano Cannicci (1811–1878), Niccolò studied painting at the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts with Giuseppe Marubini and Enrico Pollastrini. He also attended Antonio Ciseri's school of nude painting .

In 1868 he joined the Macchiaioli artist group, where he met Giovanni Fattori and Telemaco Signorini .

1875 visited Canicci together with Giovanni Fattori, Francesco Gioli and Egisto Ferroni Paris , where the artist the Impressionists met. In Florence he had worked in the “Comitato Decentrista” since 1876, which under Diego Martelli supported an extension of the autonomy of the local academies. The collaboration with Martelli lasted several years. In the same year the artist moved with his family to the area of San Gimignano , where he studied nature.

In 1890 Cannicci spent some time in the psychiatric clinic in Siena. In 1899 he took part in the 3rd International Art Exhibition in Venice.

Niccolò Cannicci also illustrated books, a. a. Works by Renato Fucini, Ferdinando Giannetti, Orazio Grandi and Matilde Bartolommei Gioli.
