Nicholas Brown Sr.

Nicholas Brown Sr. ( July 26, 1729 - May 29, 1791 ) was a trader from Providence, Rhode Island . He was co-founder of the College in the English Colony of Rhode Iceland and Providence Plantations , later in honor of his son Nicholas Brown Jr. in Brown University has been renamed.

Life

Nicholas Brown was the son of James Brown II . This was himself a descendant of Chad Brown , a co-founder of Rhode Island . In 1764 Nicholas Brown founded (among others, together with his brothers Moses and John Brown) what would later become Brown University.

He was also a well-known slave trader who got rich with the Atlantic Triangle Trade .
