The island was mapped using aerial photographs from the US Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named it after the New Zealander Robert Thomas Nicholson (* 1938), who, as a carpenter, played a key role in the construction of the nearby Casey station in 1966.
