Nicogreen is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). It is also marketed as a club variety under the brand name Greenstar .

description

The apple is medium-sized and tall. Nicogreen is regularly greenish-yellow and can be slightly colored on the sunny side. The skin is smooth, the lenticels less pronounced than in Granny Smith's. The apple is sweet with no other nuances. The flesh is juicy, firm and somewhat coarse-celled. They retain their strength even under unfavorable conditions during storage. Due to the high vitamin C content, the flesh browns only a little after cutting.

The shell is very insensitive to pressure, but visually suffers from hailstorms.

Tree grows moderately, is poorly branched and tends to shed. The leaves are large and strong.

Cultivation and history

The variety blooms late. The harvest time in Europe is the beginning of September. In terms of yield, Nicogreen is similar to the Golden Delicious variety , making it one of the best-bearing apple trees. The apple shows hardly any alternation and can be stored for a long time. The harvest time as well as the large time window for harvest are similar to the Golden Delicious.

In the few years that the apple has been known, no particular susceptibility to diseases has been identified. The apple grows relatively quickly in storage.

Nicogreen was created out of Delcorf and Granny Smith at the Belgian tree nursery Nicolai in collaboration with the University of Leuven . The crossing took place in 1989 and the selection took place in 1996. Nicogreen is to be placed in stores as a sweet alternative to Granny Smith. The application for plant variety protection was made in 2000 and granted in 2004.
