Nicolas Engel (cyclist)

Nicolas Engel (born April 30, 1902 in Hesperange , † December 28, 1946 in Luxembourg ) was a cyclist from Luxembourg and Luxembourg champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Engel, who competed for the Velosport Hesperange club , competed in both road and track races and also drove cross-country races . His most significant achievements were winning several national cycling titles. He won the junior sprint in 1922 and the professional drivers in 1929. In 1923 he became champion in the amateur street race. In 1924 he was runner-up in the cyclo-cross race and in 1927 in the road race for professional drivers behind Nicolas Frantz . From 1926 to 1932 he was a professional driver and initially competed mainly in track races in France .

Professional

After finishing his career, he worked temporarily as a manager for cyclists, then worked as a waiter and ran a café in Luxembourg with his wife. In 1943 the Gestapo arrested him for treating a collaborator unkindly. He spent two years in a concentration camp .

Honors

The UC Dippach association organized the Nick-Engel Grand Prix in his honor for several years.
