Nicolas Michel

Nicolas Michel (born November 7, 1949 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) is a Swiss lawyer .

Life

Nicolas Michel holds a Master of Arts in international relations from Georgetown University in 1979 and a doctorate in law from the University of Friborg . In 1987 he became professor of international law and European law at the same university, a position he held until 1998.

In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate from the Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg , the following year he was again professor of international law at the University of Geneva , at the Graduate Institute for International Studies and Development Research in Geneva and at the Academy for International Humanitarian Law in Geneva (ADH).

Nicolas Michel then became legal advisor to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (1998–2003) and chairman of the Committee of Legal Advisers for International Law of the Council of Europe (2003–2004). In 2004 he was appointed President of the Institute for Anthropological Studies Philanthropos in Freiburg.

From 2004 to 2008 he was head of the legal department of the United Nations, where he was appointed special advisor and mediator in the border dispute between Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
