The Nicolas Rocks are a group of cliff rocks in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . They are 4 km from the western end of Coronation Island on the northwest side of the Larsen Islands .
The American sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer and his British counterpart George Powell discovered them in December 1821 while they were exploring the South Orkney Islands together. Powell named it Cape Nicolas after Nicholas of Myra because the day these rocks were discovered (December 6th) fell on the feast day of this saint of the Eastern and Latin Churches . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee adapted Powell's naming in 1957 to the actual nature of the object.
