Johann "Zappa" Cermak (born July 7, 1949 in Heidenreichstein ) is an Austrian blues musician , composer and band leader.

Live and act

Zappa grew up in the Waldviertel near the Iron Curtain on the Czech border. The budding forester was a music fanatic from an early age. One of his role models at the time was Frank Zappa , after whom he was soon given the stage name "Zappa" because of its resemblance, and which was to accompany him throughout his life.

After participating in several bands, he founded the band Bluespumpm in 1975 , where he is still the frontman for vocals, blues harp and guitar . His distinctive voice has earned him the honorable title “Austrian Tom Waits ”.

At a large number of concerts and on records and CDs, he has since interpreted his own and covered numbers solo, with the Bluespumpm or other partners such as Rudi Biber , Peter Ratzenbeck , Donovan , Mick Taylor , Harri Stojka , Doris Windhager or the Wild Irish Lasses ( Nadja Milfait and Judith Pechoc ). In 2008 he married the folk musician Judith Pechoc, front lady of the latter band, in his second marriage. Since then they have often performed together.

In 2016 he set texts by Gerhard Blaboll to music together with Judith Pechoc . The successful experiment with German-language blues “I want to talk to whom” has since been a fixed part of his concerts; Titles such as “Dora”, “The night was a madness” or “I would be a Wurschtel without di” are sung along by the audience, such as the classics “Ring of Fire”, “Whiskey in the Jar” or “Down by the Riverside”.
