Peter Ratzenbeck (2013)

Peter Ratzenbeck (born October 10, 1955 in Graz ) is an Austrian guitarist , composer and music teacher .

Life

At the age of 16, Peter Ratzenbeck received his first guitar from a mail order company. He learned his first songs and the first guitar fingerings from his friend Xao Seffcheque from Graz , and Peter Ratzenbeck has remained an autodidact to this day . His secondary "music school" was the street, where in the 1970s he earned his living as a street musician in underpasses and on town squares in numerous cities in the Federal Republic of Germany , England , Scotland and Ireland . In 1976 Peter Ratzenbeck had his first public concert as a newcomer in Bregenz , a year later he was already playing in the main program. At this time the first record with 16 tracks was produced. At that time he was inspired by Leo Kottke on the twelve-string guitar , but also by pieces such as Angi by Davey Graham and Eleanor Rigby by Werner Lämmerhirt , with whom he also worked for a while and played the second guitar on stage.

Before Ratzenbeck began to appear more and more as a solo artist, he played with established greats in Austropop , such as STS , Wilfried and Boris Bukowski . In 1980 he became friends with the Irish folk musician, singer and songwriter Andy Irvine , with whom he continues to perform together to this day.

In 2005 Peter Ratzenbeck celebrated a triple anniversary: his 50th birthday, the 30th anniversary on the stage and his 20th record. In August of this year Peter recorded his CD Resonances on the British island in Carlisle , Cumbria , with the English guitarist and songwriter Michael Chapman , where musical greats such as Andy Irvine, Dougie MacLean and Michael Chapman performed as guest musicians , the latter also as a producer co-responsible for the CD.

In 2007 Ratzenbeck was invited by Reinhard Mey to play on his CD Bunter Hund . He took over the guitar part on various pieces.

When Peter Ratzenbeck is not on tour , where he only plays his own compositions apart from a few pieces from other origins, he retires to his remote home in the northern Waldviertel and writes on new compositions. About the creation of his compositions, Ratzenbeck said in an interview in the spring of 2013: “I'm just the antenna, set to receive. This catches something, or it doesn't, you can't force it. It can happen that a composition takes a year. "

His music itself cannot be clearly classified. Musically, his focus is on Irish music , but he is also familiar with New Age , folk , blues , baroque and lute music . He plays around 60 to 70 concerts a year and holds guitar workshops in between.

Others

Peter Ratzenbeck mainly plays acoustic guitars made by Martin Guitars , but also a model made by the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, founded in 1976 by Richard Hoover in California . The two renowned guitar makers Larrivee and Stevens Custom Guitars each brought out their own signature model , built according to Peter Ratzenbeck's specifications. In 2013, the traditional American brand Martin Guitars honored Peter Ratzenbeck's life's work with a signature guitar, which was presented to the public in March 2014. The label in this guitar, a special model based on the OM 28 V, bears the handwritten signature of both Peter Ratzenbeck himself and Christian Frederick Martin IV.

Peter Ratzenbeck is also known by his nickname Mr. Fingerpicking . He is married and has three grown children (Oliver, Jasmin and Simon).
