Nicolas de Neufville, marquis de Villeroy , from 1663 duc de Villeroy (born October 14, 1598 , † November 28, 1685 ) was Marshal of France .

He excelled as a soldier in Italy , Catalonia and in taking the fortress of La Mothe in Lorraine . In 1646 he became marshal and at the same time tutor of Louis XIV. Although Mazarin was hostile to him , he remained loyal to the court during the troubles of the Fronde and thus earned the king's lasting goodwill.

In 1661 he became head of the finance council, knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit and in 1663 received the dignity of a pair and duke.

On July 11, 1617, he married Madeleine de Blanchefort de Créquy. The couple had four children:

  4. Catherine de Neufville (1639–1707) ∞ Louis of Lorraine, Count of Armagnac (1660).

He died on November 28, 1685.
