from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolau Tolentino de Almeida (born September 10, 1740 in Lisbon , Portugal , † June 23, 1811 ibid) was a Portuguese lawyer and poet. He is considered one of the most important satirists in Portugal in the 18th century.

Live and act

Nicolau Tolentino's father was a lawyer. From 1760 he studied law at the University of Coimbra . He interrupted his studies because he was employed as a teacher of rhetoric from 1767 . He was active in this activity until 1777, when he was appointed full professor of rhetoric and poetry , but from 1780 was tired of teaching and from then on worked as an official in the royal foreign ministry until his retirement.

He first worked as a poet between 1779 and 1783, although he wrote anonymously for various magazines. His work included sonnets , odes and above all satirical works. In these he attacked the Lisbon bourgeoisie strongly, which he called decadent and made fun of the rich in the guise of a poor Lisbon beggar. Only a small volume of verse was published during his lifetime.

Honors

To this day, the poet's verses are read with pleasure in Portugal and Brazil and are often sold well. Streets in Lisbon, Matosinhos , Odivelas and Queluz are named after him.
