Location and demarcation

The cultural landscape of Lower Bergisch-Märkisches country includes the Mettmann district , the Ennepe-Ruhr district with the exception of cities Breckerfeld and Witten , the Mark Brandenburg district , the city of Wuppertal , large parts of the cities Hagen , Remscheid and Solingen , as well as the cities sword and Fröndenberg of Unna district .

In the north, the Niederbergisch-Märkische Land is bordered by the Ruhr area , in the west by the Rhine rail , in the south and southeast by the cultural landscapes of Bergisches Land and Sauerland . To the east, the cultural landscape merges into the Hellwegbörden .

In contrast to the natural spatial division, the cultural landscape is primarily defined as an economic area and therefore combines parts of the Niederbergisch-Märkisches Hügelland natural area with parts of the Bergische Plateaus and parts of the Märkisches Oberland natural area according to cultural and economic criteria.

This economic area has as a cultural landscape delimiting the near-surface mining of hard coal and the proto- and early industrial metal processing and textile production.
