Nieuwerkerke (also called 't Schutje ) is a village that today belongs to the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland on the island of the same name in the Dutch province of Zeeland . It is located between Brouwershaven and Kerkwerve.
The village was first mentioned in 1298. The Gothic church of Nieuwerkerke was a subsidiary of Kerkwerve. Until 1813 Nieuwerkerke was an independent municipality, after which it was merged with Kerkwerve. The church was abandoned in the 18th century. Nieuwerkerke should not be confused with Nieuwerkerk, a larger village on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland.
