NigeriaSat-X, an earth observation satellite of the Nigerian space agency NASRDA . It was developed by a team of 26 Nigerian engineers in training at SSTL in England.

construction

NigeriaSat-X is based on the SSTL-100 satellite bus . With a weight of 87 kg, the satellite measures 0.6 m × 0.6 m × 0.6 m. The main component is the multispectral camera with a swath width of 600 km and a resolution of 22 m. Two 2 GB SSD recorders are available for storing a few pictures . Three reaction wheels and three magnets enable three-axis stabilized control of the satellite. The position detection is performed by a redundant existing vector magnetometer and four two-axis sun sensors . For any orbit change is a butane - cold gas propulsion system with 2.35 kg of fuel is available, which can generate a change in velocity of 20 m / s. The required energy of about 30 watts is more than three mounted on the satellite Gallium Arsenide - solar cells and a 15 Ah lithium-ion battery ensures.

Two redundant, 386 -based computers and a CAN bus are responsible for the data exchange on the satellite.

Communication in the S-band range reaches speeds of 9.6 kbit / s up and 38.4 kbit / s down.

Mission history

The launch took place on August 17, 2011 at 7:12 UTC with a Dnepr-1 together with Sich-2 , NigeriaSat-2 , RASAT , EduSAT , AprizeSat-5 , AprizeSat-6 and BPA-2 . The satellite took the first images just three days later. In March 2012 SSTL handed over complete control of NigeriaSat-X to NASRDA.
