The National Church of Nigeria (formerly known as the Nigerian Ecumenical Center , officially the National Christian Center ) is the most famous and important Christian church building in Nigeria. About 40–45% of Nigeria's population are Christians, see also Christianity in Nigeria .

The National Church is located in the Central Business District Area , near the Central Bank of Nigeria , in Abuja , the country's capital, and forms the Christian counterpart to the city's National Mosque, which is also nearby.

history

The Italian construction company "Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nigeria Ltd" began building the project as early as 1989. The work on the church was idle for several years, until in 2004 the Christian Organization of Nigeria founded a committee to guarantee the quick completion of the church. The construction work was then completed in 2005. The consecration was performed by the Nigerian Anglican primate , Archbishop Peter Akinola, on October 2nd of the same year, the same day that Nigeria's 45th anniversary was celebrated.

The church was built in the neo-Gothic style. The altar is in the middle of the church and automatically rotates once every ten minutes on its own axis. Yellow, green and red glass windows provide a special light and can be seen everywhere in the church. There is an organ in the right wing of the church , and the seats for the choir are nearby.

When there are no Christian festivals or services being held, the church is open to the public. There are also guided tours for interested visitors.
