NiGHTS into Dreams… is a computer game from the Jump 'n' Run genre that was developed by the Sonic Team and first published in 1996 by Sega for the Sega Saturn . A special feature was that it was mostly sold together with a special game controller , which was one of the first analog control devices for game consoles.

description

Analog gamepad from NiGHTS.

In NiGHTS you control one of two possible game characters in order to collect Ideyas that are scattered in the dream world Nightopia. These are crystals that represent parts of the personality of a dreaming being. In addition to the normal running and jumping, the game offers flight sequences when the player merges with NiGHTS, a former vassal of Wizeman, the villain's villain. In these sequences, multiple combinable movements are possible with the analog stick, which increase the number of points.

Another special feature in this game are the inhabitants of the dream world, the Nightopians. You can interact with your character to a certain extent, which the game registers and saves during the course of the game. The interactions affect the mood of these residents, and depending on the mood, the music of the game changes in a variety of ways.

Special edition

In December 1996, a stand-alone expansion was released that became known as the Christmas NiGHTS . In Japan it was sold with the console, in America it was included in various magazines. The NiGHTS version contained on this CD reacted to various data in the internal Saturn memory with different representations of the environment, game character and other choice of music.

New editions

In February 2008 a new edition of NiGHTS into Dreams appeared for the PlayStation 2 . In addition to two different game modes (including the classic Saturn mode), it also offers a picture gallery, a movie theater and support for the 16: 9 image format . The Christmas edition Christmas NiGHTS is also playable after activation. However , according to Takashi Iizuka , the remake will not be marketed outside of Japan or ported to Wii .

In October 2012 a new edition for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 appeared, in December of the same year also on Steam .

successor

In December 2007, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, a sequel to NiGHTS into Dreams, was released exclusively for Wii . The game has been available in Europe since January 18, 2008.
