Nijō (Tennō)

Emperor Nijō

Nijō ( Japanese 二条 天皇 , Nijō-tennō ; * July 31, 1143 ; † September 5, 1165 ) was the 78th Tennō of Japan (September 5, 1158-3 August 1165). His proper name was Morihito ( 守仁 ). He was the first son of Go-Shirakawa -tennō and father of Rokujō -tennō.

During his reign, the real politics of his father, the former Go-Shirakawa-tennō was determined. The politician and samurai Taira no Kiyomori supported him.

This type of government in Japan is also called insi or monastic rule.
