Nijō Yoshimoto

Nijō Yoshimoto ( Japanese 二条 良 基 , * 1320 ; † July 16, 1388 ) was a Japanese Waka and Renga poet, scholar and court official.

The son of Kampaku Nijō Michihira received honorary court positions in his youth. Until the split into the northern and southern dynasties in 1336, he was in the service of the Tennō Go-Daigo . He then joined the north court, where he maintained good relationships with both the imperial court and the shogunate. From 1381 to 1287 he held the office of Dajō Daijin (Grand Chancellor).

Yoshimoto began his writing career with traditional waka poems. He achieved his real importance as a poet in the field of Renga poetry , which appeared in the volumes Bunna Senku (1355) and Ishiyama hyakuin (1385). A renga competition with the poet Shua appeared under the title Yoshimoto Shua hyakuban renga-awase .

With the poet Gusai , Yoshimoto compiled the Renga collection Tsukuba-shū , which appeared in 1357. He also wrote several theoretical writings on the Renga poetry, including Tsukuba mondo (1372), Kyushu mondo (1376), Renga juyo (1379) and Jumon saihisho (1383). He wrote his last work Nijo Oshikoji kamonteisenki (1388) until a few days before his death.
