Leroy Brown

Leroy Taylor Brown (born January 25, 1902 in New York , † April 21, 1970 in Sharon ) was an American athlete who specialized in the high jump . He won an Olympic silver medal.

In 1923, Leroy Brown won the Millrose Games with Richmond Landon , the 1920 Olympic gold medalist . The height of 1.96 m jumped by both athletes set an indoor world record.

On June 7, 1924, exactly one month before his start at the Olympic Games , Brown succeeded in jumping over 1.99 m in New York. With this achievement he would have won the gold medal in Paris . There, however, he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Harold Osborn , who became Olympic champion with one centimeter less (1.98 m). Brown jumped 1.95 m and could look forward to silver; Bronze went to the French Pierre Lewden (1.92 m).

Leroy Brown made it into the top ten of the world rankings four times:

  • 1921: 10th place with 1.89 m, jumped on May 28 in Cambridge
  • 1922: 5th place with 1.94 m, jumped on May 27th in Cambridge
  • 1923: 2nd place with 1.97 m, jumped on September 1st in Chicago
  • 1924: 2nd place with 1.99 m, jumped on June 7th in New York.

Leroy Brown started for the New York Athletic Club, was 1.78 m tall and 64 kg.
