Nikolaj Iliew ( Bulgarian Николай Илиев , English transcription Nikolay Iliev ; born March 31, 1964 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian football player .

Career

He owes his popularity in Germany to the fact that he played with Hertha BSC in the 2nd Bundesliga North in the 1991/1992 season. The defender scored one goal in ten games and ended up in third place with Hertha. Iliev began his career in 1983 with Levski Sofia . After six years he moved to FC Bologna in 1986 before joining Hertha BSC in 1991. After returning to Levski Sofia, he played one season for the club from the Bulgarian capital. The last stop of his playing days was Stade Rennes , where he ended his career after the 1994/95 season.

Iliev played in 54 international matches for the Bulgarian national soccer team and scored five goals. He was also part of the Bulgarian national team, which reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup in 1994 .

1987 Iiev was voted Bulgarian Footballer of the Year .
