Life

Born in Saint Petersburg to a Polish family, he began his military career as a cadet in 1855. He served in the 75th Infantry Regiment stationed in Sevastopol . He gained his first combat experience against tribal warriors from the Caucasus. In the Russo-Ottoman War (1877-1878) he made a name for himself and was commander of the Southern Ussuri Division in 1895.

Linewitsch commanded the First Siberian Army Corps during the Boxer Rebellion . In 1900 he took part in the Battle of Beijing. In 1903 he was appointed Commander of the Priamur Region as Governor General of Dauria . When the Russo-Japanese War broke out, he was temporarily in command of the Russian Army in Manchuria until General Alexei Nikolayevich Kuropatkin arrived on March 15, 1904. Between October 1904 and March 3, 1905, he again commanded the Russian Army in Manchuria. After the Russian defeat in the Battle of Mukden , General Kuropatkin was relieved of his command and Linevich was put in his place. Linewitsch repeatedly asked the tsar to approve supplies. He would need a troop ratio of 1.5: 1 to venture an offensive against the Japanese. He was also against the armistice negotiations with Japan. After the Treaty of Portsmouth the war ended. Linewitsch witnessed the withdrawal of Russian troops from Manchuria and the Russian workers' uprisings. He was reluctant to take military action against the workers.

When the Russian Revolution broke out in 1905 , he hesitated in putting down the uprising and was relieved of his command. He spent the rest of his life in retirement.
