Nikolaos Lytras ( Greek Νικόλαος Λύτρας ; born May 11, 1883 in Athens ; † 1927 ibid) was an important Greek painter at the beginning of the 20th century .

Life

Like his father Nikiforos Lytras , Nikolaos studied painting at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . Unlike his father, however, he was more open to the artistic currents of the time and thus became a link between the romantic realism of the 19th century and modern art of the 20th century.

In 1917, together with Konstantinos Parthenis , Perikles Byzantios , Theophrastos Triantaphyllides and Lykourgos Kogebinas, he founded an artist group that had set itself the goal of overcoming the burden of academic painting . The exhibitions of this group in 1917, 1918 and 1928 brought the style of French painting to Greece.

In 1923 Lytras was together with Parthenis a candidate for taking over the management of the painting faculty at the Athens School of Fine Arts . Ultimately, Lytras was entrusted with the management of the faculty, with the result that, as the son of Nikiforos Lytras, he was accused of representing the so-called Munich School of Painting , which was considered outdated. However, this was not accepted by contemporary art critics. Lytras is not regarded as a representative of the academic realism of the 19th century, but more modern as the fellow candidate Parthenis. He introduced expressionism in Greece with his special style and color compositions . His landscapes and portraits are in no way inferior to other European Expressionists.
