Nikolaos Sophianos
Nikolaos Sophianos ( Greek Νικόλαος Σοφιανός ; born around 1500 in Corfu ; died after 1551 in Venice ) was a Greek humanist .
Sophianos was born in Corfu into a noble family and went to Rome to study at the Greek grammar school founded by Janos Laskaris , among others . Another teacher there was Arsenios Apostolios . Sophianos spent the rest of his life as a copyist and librarian in Rome and Venice , with the exception of a trip in 1543 that took him to Mount Athos , where he found, among other things, a manuscript by the orator Isocrates .
Sophianos is best known for his cartographic work, the Totius Graeciae Descriptio , and for his grammar of modern Greek . The map of Greece was printed in Rome in 1540 and in Basel in 1544, but these prints have been lost. A third printing was organized by Johannes Oporinus in 1545 .
In addition, he wrote a script about production and use of the astrolabe ( Περί κατασκευής και χρήσεως κρικωτού αστρολάβου , probably written in 1534 and printed in 1539) and scholia to the Geography of Claudius Ptolemy and a translation of the Scriptures about the education of the youth of Plutarch into modern Greek.
