Nicholas III Eppenreither

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicholas III Eppenreither was abbot of the Waldsassen monastery from 1417 to 1433.

Nicholas III Eppenreither was abbot of the Waldsassen monastery at the time of the Hussite Wars . He was in regular contact with the Cheb council to discuss the plans of the Hussites and mutual assistance in the event of a threat. An attack on the monastery did not take place during this time by the Hussites, but in the course of a feud between Knight Hynko / Hynek Kruschina von Schwanberg and his followers. In 1430, Hynko plundered the monastery by taking inventory and livestock. The associated localities in the area were burned down. During this time the Council of Elbogen complained about the knight, who apparently took advantage of the lack of rights in the turmoil of the civil war. Historical researchers like the Prague bishop Karel Kašpar wrongly assigned Hynko Kruschina von Schwanberg to the Hussites, to whom the plundering of a monastery like Waldsassen could plausibly have been attributed. Only in 1433 under Abbot John VI. Wendel , there was a major looting under the Hussite leader Jakoubek von Vřesovice , which apparently did not harm people.
