Career

Nikolaus Obermauer, also known as Nico Obermauer, grew up in Cologne and started boxing at SC "Colonia" Cologne in 1933. He was very light and, as an adult, always boxed at the flyweight, which back then reached a body weight of 50.8 kg. From 1940 he started for the Post SV Köln.

In 1937, when he was not even 17, Nikolaus Obermauer became the German senior champion for the first time. He defeated in the final on April 15, 1938 in Frankfurt am Main Jakob Bamberger from Frankfurt on points. On July 2, 1938, he was first used in the German national relay in an international match against England . In Berlin he was defeated by the much more experienced Russell on points.

In 1939 Nikolaus Obermauer started for Germany at the European Championships in Dublin . In the flyweight he won over Kirch, England and Otto Lehtinen from Finland and thus faced the Irish Jimmy Ingle in the final battle . In an even fight he was defeated by this just on points and was thus vice European champion.

In the further course of his career, Nikolaus Obermauer had to forego participation in other international championships due to the war. But he was again German flyweight champion in 1940, 1941 and 1943. In 1939 he was eliminated from Bochum in the semifinals against Monczyk . He also fought a large number of country battles until 1943, in which he was victorious in the majority.

Nikolaus Obermauer was back in the ring after the end of World War II and was again German runner-up in the flyweight division in 1948. He fought a total of 221 fights in his career, of which he lost only 23. In October 1946 Obermauer in Helmstedt / Lower Saxony was zone champion of the British zone and at the zone championships in June 1947 in Düsseldorf in the final controversially defeated.

He lived in Cologne-Worringen . On January 21, 2001, Nikolaus Obermauer died in his house in Cologne-Worringen, Zu den Bendengärten 13. He was buried in the Worringen cemetery.
