Nicholas of Martiny

Nikolaus von Martiny (born October 16, 1896 in Lemberg ; † June 6, 1991 in Zurich ) was an Austrian officer, manufacturer and art ceramist.

During the First World War , Nikolaus von Martiny, who came from a Hungarian aristocratic family, served as an officer in the Austrian navy , after which he studied ceramics at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1920 he founded the Radstädter Kunst-Keramik Martiny in Radstadt . After the fire in the Radstadt ceramics factory in 1924, Martiny moved to Liezen , where he founded the Alpenländische Kunstkeramik Liezen ("AKK") , which in 1928 - with Martiny as technical manager - became the property of the Vasold company. In its early phase, it mainly produced figural expressionist ceramics and thus achieved international recognition and awards at exhibitions.

Martiny was married to the artist Margarethe von Holzhausen (1893–1976) on December 28, 1921 . Their daughter, the artist Elisabeth Charlotte Martiny , was born in 1929. The family had lived in the Kreuzhäusler villa in Liezen since 1925.

In 1939 Martiny published the work Pictorial Documents from Austria-Hungary's Naval War 1914–1918. With descriptions of the most important combat operations at sea using domestic and foreign official sources, diary entries and reports . 2. Vol. Leykam, Graz 1939.

During the Second World War , Nikolaus von Martiny served as a lieutenant captain in the German navy from 1941 . After 1945 Martiny moved to Switzerland and founded the ceramic workshop in Kilchberg ZH .
