Nikon (goldsmith)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikon ( Greek Νίκων ) was an ancient Greek goldsmith .

Today Nikon is only known of one signature , which is preserved on a gold-plated silver pyxis and identifies Nikon as the creator of the vessel ( Νίκων ἐποίησε Níkōn epoíēse ). The pyxis belongs to the so-called " Treasure of Taranto " formerly in the Rothschild Collection. It can therefore be assumed that Nikon was not only active in southern Italy , but also possibly in Taranto . The treasure is around 200 BC. Dated BC, accordingly Nikon's lifetime are to be set in the years before and after.
