The Nilgiri Mountains or Nilgiris for short ( Tamil நீலகிரி Nīlakiri , literally: "Blue Mountains") are a mountain range in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India . The British did in colonial times from some places in the Nilgiris (z. B. Ooty , Coonoor , Kotagiri ) preferred hill stations . The Nilgiri Mountains are recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve .
Geography and climate
The Nilgiri mountains are part of the Western Ghats , at the edge of the Deccan Plateau - Plateau run. The highest point in the Nilgiris is the Doddabetta with a height of 2637 m. The most important place is Udagamandalam (Ooty), located at over 2200 m altitude, with around 95,000 inhabitants. The climate of the Nilgiri Mountains, which have at least 24 peaks over 2000 m, is significantly cooler than in the tropical plains of southern India due to the altitude; Rain (1845 mm / year) falls mainly during the summer monsoon season.

population
The indigenous tribal peoples ( Adivasi ) of the Badaga , Kota , Irula and Toda settle in the Nilgiri Mountains . The Toda huts made of twigs and grass are one of the attractions of the Nilgiri Mountains.
Economy and tourism
The main economic factors in the Nilgiris are tea cultivation and tourism. Other attractions in the Nilgiris is one of Mukurthi National Park and the UNESCO - World Heritage counting railway Nilgiri Mountain Railway .
