Kotagiri ( Tamil : கோத்தகிரி , Kōttakiri = "Mountain of Kota") is a mountain town with around 28,000 inhabitants in the Nilgiri Mountains in the west of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The name refers to the tribal people of the Kota who settled in the area around the city.

Location and climate

Kotagiri is located at about 1985  m altitude about 30 km east of Udagamandalam ( Ooty ) and 16 km southwest of Kodanad . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 1300 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

Approx. 77.5% of the population are Hindus and around 5.5% are Muslims ; the Christian share of the population is very high at around 16.5%. The female proportion of the population is approx. 8% higher than the male. Only about 10% of the population are illiterate. 52% speak Tamil as their mother tongue, 26% Badaga , 9% Malayalam , 7% Telugu and 3% Kannada .

For centuries, farming was the livelihood of the population; Today the cultivation of tea plants plays the most important role. Inner Indian tourism has increased in importance since the last decades of the 20th century - Kotagiri is a mountain resort.

history

The Governor (District Collector) John Sullivan, a former secretary of the British East India Company , built the first European house in the Nilgiri Mountains in 1819, at the time of British colonial rule , in the nearby village of Kannerimukku , which is now in a state of disrepair . Due to the charming landscape and the moderate climate, the place became a hill station of the British colonial rulers in the region.

Attractions

Kotagiri itself has no outstanding sights. The Catherine Falls , located approx. 6 km south of the village, are among the tourist attractions . Also impressive are various views from the mountain heights and mountain roads into the gorges, as well as the Longwood Shola Forest, a pristine mountain forest area 3 km away.
