Nils Eekhoff (born January 28, 1998 ) is a Dutch cyclist .
Athletic career
Eekhoff won various international cycling races in the junior division and received a contract with the development team Sunweb from the first season as a U23 rider in 2017 . He won the U23 edition of Paris-Roubaix in his first year in the new category . In addition to other successes, he won his first international elite one-day race in 2019 with the Ronde van Overijssel . At the end of the season he drove as a stagiaire for the UCI WorldTeam Sunweb , with which he also received a regular contract from 2020. At the same time, he won the prologue of the UCI Nations' Cup U23 competition Course de la Paix-Grand Prix Priessnitz spa for the Dutch national team and came fifth in the U23 road race of the 2019 European Championships .
After Eekhoff took seventh place in the U23 individual time trial at the subsequent World Championships in 2019 , he won the sprint of a top group of seven in the road race. Eekhoff was only able to catch up with the top four on the final kilometer with two other drivers. However, he was disqualified for prohibited slipstream driving behind an escort vehicle after falling during the first 100 kilometers of the race. The cameraman who provided the pictures said it was an action like the one he had seen in over 1000 chases to catch up after falls in 41 years of work, while the jury stated that it had been a longer period of time, so the harshest possible punishment had to be pronounced. The disqualification was only made after the race, as the pictures were only then available. The UCI later published the pictures of the process that led to the disqualification.
