Nils Handal
Nils Kristoffer Handal (born June 18, 1906 in Bergen ; † December 28, 1992 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Social Democratic Labor Party . In the course of his life he was the mayor of Bergen, the Norwegian Minister of Industry and Defense and the Fylkesmann of Oppland .
Life
Handal, son of sergeant Ole Monsen Handal and Martha Malene Sjursen, finished his studies in philology in 1932 . He then worked as a teacher in Bergen, from 1935 on at the city's commercial high school. In 1945 he was elected mayor of the city, which he remained until 1953. On November 2, 1953, he was finally appointed Minister of Industry in the Torp government. He took over the office from his party colleague Lars Evensen . After Einar Gerhardsen took over the post of Prime Minister again on January 22, 1955 , Handal became Minister of Defense of the Gerhardsen III government . He left office on February 18, 1961 and became the new Fylkesmann in what was then the province of Oppland . He held this post until 1976.
