His Charlie Chaplin parody in particular was very popular and earned him the title “the Swedish Chaplin”. Similarities with Chaplin were obvious, but Poppe soon developed his own style. In 1948 the film character Fabian Bom was born. It was to become Poppe's most popular film role, for which he also wrote the manuscript. The 1948 film Soldat Bom (where Bom is a reference to the Swedish word "bom" - miss shot -) was a huge hit and ran in Stockholm cinemas for 48 weeks. A total of seven so-called Bom films were shot, which also became popular in Germany, among them Schütze Bumm in need .

The comedian Poppe also took part in two Bergman films , in The Seventh Seal from 1957 as Jof the juggler and in The Devil's Eye from 1960 as a pastor. Here he successfully played serious roles, which he had not been trusted.

The Fredriksdals Theater

In 1966 Nils Poppe took over the Fredriksdalsteatern open air theater in Helsingborg. With operettas such as Charley's Tante , Im Weißen Rößl and Der Fiedler auf dem Dach , the Fredriksdals Theater quickly became a crowd puller. Every summer everyone wanted to see the popular Nils Poppe, regardless of whether the sun was shining or it was raining. When Swedish television started recording the summer shows and broadcasting them in the winter, the audience increased even more. Now Poppe was theater director, producer, director and actor. In 1993, at the old age of 85, he gave his farewell performance, after which his colleague Eva Rydberg took over the theater to continue it in the spirit of Poppe.
