Nimbochromis livingstonii ( Syn .: Haplochromis livingstonii ) is a cichlid that is widespreadin Lake Malawi . It also occurs in the Upper Shire and Lake Malombes .
features
Nimbochromis livingstonii reaches a maximum length of 25 cm (females stay smaller) and is one of the larger cichlids of Lake Malawi. His body height reaches 32.9 to 38.3% of the standard length , the head length is 34 to 37% of the standard length, the head width 40.8 to 47% of the head length, the length of the lower jaw reaches 37.5 to 46.2% of the head length . The base of the dorsal fin occupies 49.6 to 53.7% of the standard length. The basic color of the body is silvery, dirty white, cream-colored to gray-green. The sides of the body are patterned with irregular olive green to dark brown spots. The dorsal and caudal fin are smoke colored and patterned with reddish brown spots and lines. The smoky gray anal fin has two yellow egg spots. Males ready to spawn have a bright blue colored head. The lower jaw protrudes.

Way of life
Nimbochromis livingstonii occurs in all habitats of Lake Malawi, but is most common in protected bays overgrown with Vallisneria . It prefers soft soils, but is also found in rocky areas. He is a specialized piscivorous predator who lies down on the ground, imitating a dead fish, and then catches small scavengers that approach him. Like almost all Malawi cichlids, Nimbochromis livingstonii is a mouthbrooder .
