Lake Malombesee is the third largest lake in Malawi ( East Africa ).

description

It lies at a height of 472 m, is almost 30 km long, up to 15 km wide, 7 m deep and has partly overgrown, partly marshy banks . The lake is an extension of the Shire River , which drains Lake Malawi further north . Since Lake Malawi is only 13 km to the north and is far more interesting for tourists, Lake Malawi plays more of a role as a nature reserve . To the southeast, the Liwonde National Park covers part of its bank.

Fish fauna

The fish fauna of the lake is dominated by small to medium-sized cichlids , some of which the Malombesee shares with the much larger and more species-rich Lake Malawi. Most important are representatives of the genera Lethrinops , Otopharynx and Copadichromis , which are mostly only 7 to 8 cm long, make up about 70% of the fish catches of the local fishermen and are referred to by them as "Kambuzi". Other cichlids living in the lake are the almost 30 cm long “Chambo” ( Oreochromis sp.), The “Mbaba” ( Buccochromis sp.) And the “Mcheni” ( Rhamphochromis sp.). The different Rhamphochromis species are fish-eaters and mainly eat the carp fish Engraulicypris sardella , Copadichromis and Diplotaxodon sp., Another species of cichlid. The most common "Mcheni" species, Rhamphochromis longiceps becomes 20 cm long and is thus the smallest Rhamphochromis species. Other fish in the lake are the catfish "Kampango" ( Bagrus meridionalis ) and Clarias gariepinus , which is the largest fish in the lake with a maximum length of one meter and a maximum weight of 20 kg.

According to the FAO , 12,100 t of fish are caught in the lake every year.
