Otopharynx ( Gr . "Tos" = ear + "pharynx" = throat, pharynx) is a cichlid - genus , which is endemic in Malawi , in the upper Shire and Lake Malombe in East Africa occurs.

features

Otopharynx species are 10 to 25 cm long and are a relatively unspecialized genus that is only defined by the so-called three-spot pattern. A dark spot lies on the side of the body above the pectoral fin under the front, overhead part of the lateral line , a second, usually slightly smaller, spot lies above the anal fin, roughly between both parts of the lateral line, and the third and smallest spot on the caudal fin stalk. However, a similar three-spot pattern also occurs in the genus Stigmatochromis , which is also endemic to Lake Malawi. Otopharyngeal types can be bluish, bluish-yellow, or beige in color.

Reproduction

Like almost all cichlids in Lake Malawi, the otopharynx species are agame mouthbrooders , i. H. only one sex, in this case the female, takes care of the mouthbrood. Males are territory- forming and claim several square meters of territory.
