Nine Below Zero is a British blues band that was formed in 1977 and has a loyal following to this day.
Career
The band was founded in 1977 in south London by guitarist Dennis Greaves under the name Stan's Blues Band and has built a loyal following in the London club scene. In 1979 they accepted an offer from former musician Mickey Modern to manage them. He also suggested they change their name, and they agreed on Nine Below Zero, based on the song of the same name by blues musician Sonny Boy Williamson II. In 1980 they released the EP Pack Fair and Square and their first album Live at the Marquee ( "[...] an impressive blues-rock set that recalls the energy of the early Rolling Stones performances." ). In 1981, after recording their first studio album, Nine Below Zero opened up for The Who and The Kinks . In 1983 the band broke up after Dennis Greaves formed a band called The Truth ; before that they recorded their third album. Mark Feltham began a career as a session musician for Rory Gallagher , Oasis and Roger Chapman, among others .
In 1990 Nine Below Zero reunited for an anniversary concert which was very successful and they decided to stay together. Brendan O'Neill and Gerry McAvoy completed the two founding members. 1992 Feltham left the band due to musical differences and was replaced by Alan Glen . In 1997 they founded their own record company, Zed Records . In 2001 Feltham returned. Since then they have toured regularly and performed all over Europe.
In 2004 the band performed at the Pistoia Blues Festival in Italy, which fulfilled a great wish for them. Among other things, they spent 2009 preparing for a special anniversary concert in 2010.
