Nino Equatore (born July 19, 1898 as Hans Platter in Meran , then still Austria-Hungary ; † November 24, 1965 there ) was world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling .

biography

Hans Platter was a trained baker. He was an avid wrestler, which he practiced with success, favored by his physique (he was 1.90 m tall and weighed 105 kg at the height of his career). Probably under pressure from the fascist regime in Italy , he chose the stage name Nino Equatore because, as he himself said, he expressed his international mentality and, as it seemed to him, he embraced the whole world.

His career began after the First World War . In his heyday, up to 30,000 spectators attended his wrestling matches. In 1933 and 1934 Nino Equatore was Italian champion. It wasn't until 1947, at the age of 49, that he won the world championship when he defeated the Austrian Ady Berber in Vienna . By 1950, when he retired, he had contested 71 official fights against 30 opponents, of which he won 30, fought 23 in a draw and lost 13 (the outcome of 5 fights is not known).

After his sporting career, Nino Equatore worked as a trainer and stuntman in India and South America . In 1959 he published the manual Superforza - il nuovo metodo di ginnastica , in which he presented his experiences as an athlete and his innovative training methods.

After losing all of his fortune in the revolutionary unrest in Argentina , he returned to his native Meran in the early 1960s. Here he opened a small training center, but with little success. Almost forgotten, Nino Equatore died on November 24, 1965 in his native city: he was found dead on a park bench on the city's promenade.
