Nipmuck State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the parishes of Union , Stafford , Ashford , Willington and Woodstock . The area of ​​9,209 acres (3727 hectares) surrounds Bigelow Hollow State Park . Overall, the forest is part of a system of protected areas that covers a total of 40,000 acres (16,000 hectares).

The forest area extends mainly into two large areas. A good number of parcels are west of Interstate 84 (east) . There is the Meadow Marsh session at Browns Brook . The source of the Fenton River is in the forest area and the Stoughton Brook and its tributaries form a large part of the forest. One parcel also borders the north bank of Morey Pond . There is a boat ramp there. The eastern part of the forest that borders Bigelow Hollow State Park is more dominated by lakes and swamps. Mashapaug Pond is the largest of them. The North American plate is only slightly folded at this point. The faults run from northwest to southeast. The hills and valleys also run along these lines, making Bigelow Pond , for example, the southern extension of Breakneck Pond . Corbin Wildlife Marsh and Griggs Pond lie in valley lines that run further east.

The forest has more than 30 mi (48 km) of hiking trails. One of the most popular tours is around Breakneck Pond . Snowmobile tours are also offered in winter. Fishing and ice fishing are permitted, and the waters are regularly stocked with trout . There are also black bass , largemouth bass and chain pike . Camping is also allowed.

Mountain Laurel Sanctuary

In the western part of the forest there is the Mountain Laurel Sanctuary on Snow Hill ( ). The Mountain Laurel there reaches heights of 15-20 feet (4.5-6 m).
