Bigelow Hollow State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the Union community . It is surrounded by the Nipmuck State Forest and borders Mashapaug Lake . The park and forest are located in a large hollow, which drops about 210 m below the surrounding mountain ridges.

The park, along with the surrounding Nipmuck State Forest and other woodlands of Yale Forest , Natchaug State Forest , Norcross Wildlife Refuge , and Hull Foresters, forms one of the largest contiguous forests in southern New England. The park includes 209 hectares (240 hectares with water surfaces, 18 hectares is Bigelow Pond;). The surrounding forests extend over 325 km 2 . To the north, Bigelow Hollow State Park is bounded by Mashapaug Pond . Bigelow Brook connects the two lakes.

Access to the park is via Interstate 84 (East) and Route 171 .

Freetime activities

There are opportunities for hiking and picnicking in the park, there is a landing point for boats, and swimming and fishing are permitted. Ice fishing is also possible in winter. Fish species are trout , largemouth bass and American pike . The park is also where the hiking trails circling the nearby Breakneck Pond begin . Most of the vegetation in the park is evergreen and some paths have become overgrown. Camping is also allowed in the park. One of the main attractions in winter are marked trails for snowmobiling.
