Pachaug State Forest is the largest state forest in the US state of Connecticut, encompassing the parishes of Voluntown , Griswold , Plainfield , Sterling , North Stonington, and Preston . The forest comprises 28,804 acres (11,656.6 hectares) of land and extends from the Rhode Island border over much of New London County . The forest was established in 1928, but most of the land was acquired during the Great Depression .

geography

The forest got its name from the Pachaug River that runs through the area. Overall, the forest belongs to the Northeastern Coastal Forests ecoregion . In the northeast, after the border with Rhode Island, the Nicholas Farm Management Area joins in the Coventry area and further south Beach Pond State Park and Arcadia Ponds ( Exeter ). Hopeville Pond State Park is immediately adjacent to the western end of the area .

Great Meadow

The Pachaug-Great Meadow Swamp was declared a National Natural Landmark in May 1973 . It is an important example of a swampy area covered with white false cypress trees . This forest type is threatened by natural succession , where hemlock make wide.

free time activities

There are four popular hiking trails:

  • Pachaug Trail , which stretches 30 mi (48 km) from east to west. It starts at the north end of Pachaug Pond and leads to Green Fall Pond .
  • Nehantic Trail runs 15 mi (24 km) from Green Fall Pond near the entry point of the Pachaug Trail and runs northwest near the Pachaug River .
  • The Quinebaug Trail runs south to north for a distance of 7 mi (13 km) from the junction of Breakneck Hill Road and Nehantic Trail to Spaulding Road.
  • Narragansett Trail extends from southwest to northeast. It begins on Lantern Hill in North Stonington. The Narragansett Trail leaves the state on the border of Rhode Island and leads into the Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rhode Island and later ends at Ashville Pond in Canonchet in Hopkinton , Rhode Island .

The Rhododendron Sanctuary Trail at Herman Main Chapman Management Area ( ) is a popular destination in May – July when the rhododendron is in full bloom. The path is wheelchair accessible. In addition, there are a large number of other forest trails and roads that are often used. Mountain biking, horse riding and motocross riding are particularly popular leisure activities.

Motocross

The 58-mile (93.3 km) long enduro trail in the forest is marked with white signs with a red arrow. The route follows different forest trails and public roads.
