Nis Puk , or Nes Pük, is a character from the field of folk tales . The name combines the names Nisse and Puk . The legendary figure is mainly known in the Schleswig region on both sides of the German-Danish border (also Sønderjylland ≈ Southern Jutland) in the German-Danish border region.

The Nis Puk has the following properties:

  • The Nis Puk should take care of the house, yard and animals if the residents are willing to treat their own children and pets well and have a balancing effect within the house and the village.
  • The Nis Puk is said to live in the attic or in a barn. Apparently adults can no longer see him.
  • Once a year, at Christmas , the Nis Puk has to be brought a bowl of grits (with butter). If that doesn't happen, the Nis Puk wanders to another village. House and yard would then be exposed to greed and decay without protection.

An example of the Nis Puk is the legend of the Nis Puk from the Lindewitt-Hof near Flensburg .

Different receptions

In 2003, Silja Kahl compiled several of the legends in Nis Puk: Leben und Sage .

Under the title Niss Puk there is a lyrical arrangement of the material by Peter Johann Willatzen , which was set to music by Wilhelm Berger as one of his three chants for mixed choir op.44 . In it, however, the puk does not appear as a helpful house ghost, but as a tormenting goblin, from which the farmer cannot free himself by moving.

Boy Lornsen describes in his children's books the events in a whole community of (mostly friendly) Puken. Also have Kari Köster-Delete and Dierck pulse Nis Puk made the subject of children's books.

In front of a krog in Neukirchen there is a small statue of Nis Puk.
