Nodir Devonbegi Madrasa

The Nodir-Devonbegi-Madrasa is a madrasa in the Uzbek city of Buxoro .

location

The madrasa is located in the historic center of Buxoro and is part of the Labi Hovuz building ensemble . It lies to the east of the water basin and the park to the east and is compared to the Nodir-Devonbegi-Chanaqa in the Kosch principle . Since the pool and a park lie between the two buildings, this relationship is barely noticeable.

history

The Nodir Devonbegi Madrasa was laid out in 1623 by Nodir Devonbegi , the uncle and grand vizier of Imam Quli Khan , and is named after him. It was built about three years later than the Nodir-Devonbegi-Khanaqa opposite it and is therefore the youngest building of the Labi Hovuz ensemble.

According to legend, the building was initially designed as a caravanserai , but was then converted into a madrasa by order of Imam Quli Khan.

description

The main facade of the Nodir Devonbegi Madrasa has a central pishtak with an ivan . On both sides of the Pischtak there are three axes of two-storey pointed arch arcades with entrances to the students' living cells. A semicircular corner tower in front of the facade, which ends with the upper edge of the arcades, closes the facade off from the outside. The facade is decorated with multicolored mosaics. The depiction of two Simurges flying towards a sun with a human face, holding animals in their claws, in the tympanum of the Pishtak is unusual because the depiction of animals and people on Islamic buildings was traditionally forbidden .

The madrasa extends over a square area with an edge length of 70 meters and has a large inner courtyard, which is enclosed by two-storey pointed arch arcades with access to the student living quarters. There are no lecture halls here because the madrasa only served the students as living space.
