Noel Kempff Mercado
Noel Kempff Mercado (born February 27, 1924 in Santa Cruz ; † September 5, 1986 in the Serranía de Caparuch ) was a Bolivian naturalist who has made a name for himself in the exploration and establishment of the Huanchaca National Park .
Noel Kempff Mercado studied at the Gabriel René Moreno University in Santa Cruz, where he received his bachelor's degree in economics in 1946 and where he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1979 . He was married to María Eddy Saucedo Justiniano and had five children.
In 1986 Kempff was on a natural history expedition in the eastern border area with Brazil . When a large drug laboratory was accidentally discovered in Huanchaca National Park, he and his companions were murdered. His killers went undetected and were never caught. In honor of Kempff, the Huanchaca National Park was renamed the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in 1988 .
