Noel Mary Joseph Purcell (born December 25, 1899 in Dublin , † January 31, 1962 in Dún Laoghaire , Ireland ) was an Irish water polo and rugby player.

For the British Olympic water polo team, which was to travel to Antwerp in 1920, seven Englishmen were hired to start for Great Britain. Shortly before departure, there was a test match against a selection of players from other parts of the United Kingdom, which the English Olympic team lost 6-0. As a result, the line-up was changed at short notice and players from Ireland, Scotland and Wales were also included. Purcell, who came from Ireland, slipped into the selection that took part in the Olympics by chance. After victories against Spain and America, the team was able to become Olympic champion with a 3-2 win against Belgium and win the gold medal. Purcell did not score any goals during the tournament.

At the Olympic Games in Paris four years later, Purcell took part with an independent team from Ireland, but they were eliminated in the first round by a 2: 4 against Czechoslovakia. After his water polo career, he became a rugby player, when he came to some international games after the First World War .
