Mary Noel Streatfeild (born December 24, 1895 in Sussex , Great Britain , † September 11, 1986 ) was an English writer .

Life

Streatfeild was born in Sussex, England in 1895. She was born as the second of three daughters of the local pastor. Her life is described in three semi-biographical short stories: A Vicarage Family , Away from the Vicarage and Beyond the Vicarage . Noel was considered "ugly" among the siblings, but was the most courteous in appearance. At the beginning of adulthood she dreamed of a career in a theater and for ten years gained experience as an actress in the acting troops Charles Doran and Arthur Bourchier . Her connection to the stage formed the foundation of her well-known children's books, which were often about struggles to start a career in the fine arts. The London Weekend Television produced a six-part series of "The Growing Summer" with Wendy Hiller as Aunt Dymphna. The series was filmed at Bantry House, Ahakista, and near Kilcrohane.

Her best-known children's book remained Ballet Shoes (1936), which was nominated in the year of publication for the Carnegie Medal , which Streatfeild finally received in 1938 for her The Circus Is Coming . This book was mentioned in the film "em @ il for you" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks when the bookseller Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) is sadly sitting in another bookstore and notices that the bookseller there is not "Noel Streatfeild's shoe books" knows.

Only a few of the author's books have been translated into German.
