A noken is a multifunctional, knotted or woven bag, the Papua in the Indonesian part of West Papua (formerly in Indonesian : Irian Jaya ) of the island of New Guinea .

The Noken is typically carried hanging from the top of the head in order to transport firewood, harvested plants and fruits, other foods or even babies. Occasionally women use the noken to cover their chests. In local elections, the bag can also be used as a " ballot box ". Almost every woman in the highlands of Papua wears a head bag and it appears again and again in the cityscape of Wamena .

The Noken is made from dried tree bark, whereby the stems of orchids are also used. The manufacturing process takes between one and three weeks, depending on the size. Today the Noken is mainly produced in tourist centers in Sauwadarek-Papua. In 2012, UNESCO added the traditional handicrafts for making noken to its list of intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of conservation .
